During the past few weeks: I have learnt about British settlement in Australia. I most enjoyed the Humanities class on working on the British Settlement booklet. My attitude has been good in class. My behaviour has been good in class. My interim report in the subject wilI indicate that I have been a good student. The hardest task I have had to complete was the research essay on the the Great Southern Land. My workbook is neat, work that does not fit into my workbook is kept in my humanities folder. My greatest strength is spelling. The two areas of my learning that I want to focus on improving are: 1. Being more specific when I write answers to questions. 2. Writing essays. I am happy with the work I have submitted.
What is the most important thing that you have you learnt in Humanities in the past month?
The most important thing that I have learnt in Humanities in the past month is about the British Settlement in Australia.
What did you do to help yourself learn?
To help myself learn, I concentrated and listened to what the teacher said and did my best to complete all work on time.
What did you do that made it difficult for you to learn well?
I procrastinated at home and did my homework late at night at times which resulted me sleeping later than usual.
Who did you work with? Were these effective (good) working relationships?
I worked with Dylan, Nelson and Amanda. They were effective working relationships.
How is your progress towards meeting your goals for the semester?
My progress towards meeting my goals for the semester has been going well and I think I will achieve them without any problems.
Decide on three goals for the remainder of the semester.
Goal one: To complete and submit all my overdue work by the end of this week.
Goal two: To record everything I need to in my planner.
Goal three: Not to procrastinate for the future homework I receive.
Justify why you chose these goals.
Reason for goal one: I feel uneasy and stressed when I have overdue work and gradually become demotivated.
Reason for goal two: I feel very messy and unorganised when I don't record things I need to such as homework in my planner.
Reason for goal three: If I don't do my homework, my homework pile will stack up and I'll eventually leave it all unfinished.
Explain how you will measure or determine if you have succeeded in meeting these goals.
How I will achieve goal one: I will try to complete as much homework as I can.
How I will achieve goal two: I will take my planner out and record all the homework I need to complete for each session.
How I will achieve goal three: I will try to complete my homework as soon as possible after school each time I receive homework.
What is the most important thing(s) that you have learnt in Me & My World this semester? Justify with reasons.
The most important things that I have learnt in Me & My World this semester is that being a business person is more difficult that one would think. This is because there is a lot of organisation involved and a lot of planning to be completed. Another important thing is about learning the basics of the Economics Unit because this helps us understand how the economy works.
If you were the teacher of this class, what is one immediate change you would make which would be an improvement?
If I was the teacher of this class, one immediate change that I would make to be an improvement is to let the students be aware of the due dates well before it is due.
How do you measure personal success?
I measure my personal success by looking at my record of work and attendance, etc. (the file in our G: drives) and also looking at mid-term and semester reports.
Have you been successful in Me & My World this Semester? How do you know this or how do you make this judgement?
I have been successful in Me & My World this Semester because I have done all the work so far.
How much time in this class is profitable (used for learning)? Explain
The time used in the class for learning is not very good. When sir is explaining something it is all valuable but when we get to work a lot of us slack off and simply talk away.
What is one word you would use to describe your class?
Lacking.
What are your goals for Semester 2?
My goals for semseter 2 are:
1. To complete all set tasks on time.
2. To work progressively in class.
For each of your goals, review your progress and rate yourself on how well you have achieved each goal (out of "5 stars") explaining the reasons for each rating.
Progress and rated out of 5 so far in this semester:
Goal #1: I'd rate myself 5 out of 5 because so far, I have handed in all my set tasks for this semester.
Goal #2: I'd rate myself 3.5 out of 5 because I often work progressively but sometimes I get distracted.
How prepared do you feel you are to undertake a VCE subject next year?
I feel that I am very prepared to undertake a VCE subject next year because I know that if I put my mind to things, I can do it.
Ban on smacking I want you to firstly consider - to what degree can the law be too intrusive in our day to day lives? The handout I have supplied you has differing views on parenting and if it is acceptable to smack a child. Should the law be involved to this degree in parenting? You are required to write a response to the material provided clearly arguing your point of view. (I expect more than a two sentence response as this is a very sensitive issue for many people who have polarised opinions) In response to the article ‘Ban on smacking’ (Herald Sun, 10/09/2006) published by Mary Papadakis, an education reporter, I don’t entirely agree with her. Sure, smacking is harmful to children but if it is to discipline, this should be allowed to an extent where the child isn’t too hurt by it. However, it is reasonable for a parent to be banned from smacking if they go overboard and seriously harm their children. Even though I believe smacking is okay to a certain limit, Georgina Mangan-Georgious has said that “I used to think a little smack won’t hurt, but it’s violent,” and “The threat to take something away is far more effective than hitting them,” from the article ‘Why I Don’t Smack’. I 100% agree with Mrs Mangan-Georgious because not only do I believe this is effective, it also isn’t harmful to children. Copy and comment on the following:
a. Are you on-track to achieving your Semester 2 goals in this subject?
I am on-track to achieving my semester 2 goals in this subject so far.
b. What do you believe have been the three most important things you have learnt during Term 3?
The three most important things I have learnt during term 3 are:
The process to packaging a product.
Types of laws that exist.
Who enacts and enforces the laws.
c. Select a lesson during this term which you thought was the best and explain why you believe it was the best.
A lesson during this term which I thought was the best was when we had to do the quiz on laws and get 100%. I believe it was the best because it helped me revise some law terms and in the lesson, I also had to do the police website research project which was simple and fun.
d. Are you happy with the Homework habits you have developed and will they greatly assist you next year? Explain
I’m not quite happy with the homework habits that I have developed and I don’t think they will greatly assist me next year. I’ve become a huge procrastinator (especially in this subject) but I believe I can get my act back together while I’m at the Alpine School next term. (It is a school for student leadership after all.)
e. In what ways do you always "do your best" in this subject?
Ways that I always “do my best” in this subject is by keeping focused in class and trying my best to not get distracted.
f. Do you have "high expectations" in this subject? Explain or justify your answer
I don’t have “high expectations” in this subject because I don’t particularly like this subject and as a result, I don’t have the persistence to do the work.
g. What extra help do you need from your teacher to help you learn and to improve your skills?
I don’t think I need any extra help from my teacher to help me learn and to improve my skills.
h. Are you happy with your progress and achievement in this subject?
I’m not quite happy with the progress and achievement in this subject.
i. How many times have you been recognised on the "Hall of Fame" wiki page and how do you feel about this?
I have been recognised on the “Hall of Fame” wiki page twice but I don’t feel like I’ve achieved much because they were from term 1 and I haven’t been recognised since.
j. My teacher always ....... (complete this statement by writing a brief paragraph)
My teacher always tries to make class fun and tries to encourage us to do our work but is always criticized by the class for having boring classes. He also lectures the class a lot for the good of his students and helps his students with the work. He often asks his students what can be done to improve certain aspects of the class and goes through all opinions from students. He is very knowledgeable in the subject 'Me and My World' and often likes to give real life experiences as examples. There is always some humour in the class which makes the class more fun.
